Educational Information

The American Cancer Society offers educational materials to the general public and to health professionals. The majority of the materials are offered free of charge. Following is a list of educational opportunities and material catalogs that are available. Please call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 for more information.

Pink Ribbon Month (Month of October)
A time to create local awareness for breast cancer early detection and treatment through community based programs & activities.

Great American Smokeout (3rd Thursday of November)
The Great American Smokeout is the American Cancer Society's signature tobacco control program. Volunteers are encouraged to use the materials provided by ACS to promote local awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco.

Detection - Public Education Catalog
Contains a listing of brochures, posters & videos on breast, colorectal, oral, prostate, skin, testicular and uterine cancers.

Detection - Professional Education Catalog (Intended for Health Care Professionals)
Contains a listing of printed materials on breast, gynecological, prostate & skin cancers plus information on cancer & genetics and cancer screenings.

Patient & Family Services Catalog
Contains a listing of materials on treatment, childhood cancers, clergy resources, doctor/patient relationship, employment/insurance, pain control, psycho-social and materials geared towards trained volunteers and support group facilitators.

Free Teaching Aids
(Some materials may only be available to school personnel)
Contains a listing of teaching kits on such topics as smoking, sun protection & nutrition for grades preschool through 12th grade. These kits include classroom activities, teacher guides and videos. Brochures, posters & videos are also available.

Tobacco Control Catalogs
Contains a listing of brochures, posters & videos on quitting smoking, smoking prevention and secondhand smoke. Materials are available for both adults & children.

Research Update
The American Cancer society is the largest private source of cancer research funds in the US, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. To date, the Society has invested more than $2 billion in cancer research and more than $91 million in fiscal year 1997 alone. The American Cancer Society has also provided grant support to 28 Noble Prize winners.
