COMMERCIAL SHELLFISH HARVESTING AND RECREATIONAL CLAMMING REOPENED IN YAQUINA BAY

Waldport, Ore., March 8, 1999 1930 hours

The Oregon Department of Agriculture today reopened commercial shellfish harvesting and recreational clamming in Yaquina Bay. Oyster and clam harvesting was closed as a safety precaution when oil believed to be from the bow of the New Carissa began washing ashore Wednesday, March 3.

"We monitored the incoming tide today to watch for any possible oil releases from the bow of the New Carissa as she left the shore," said Deb Cannon, shellfish program specialist with the Department of Agriculture. "No oil was seen today so harvest restrictions were lifted. We've been monitoring Yaquina Bay on a daily basis since the ship grounded here."

Since no oil has been seen in Yaquina Bay, sampling was not a requirement for opening the shellfish harvest area. Monitoring will continue until beach clean up is completed.

The opening is good news for Oregon Oyster, the oyster-growing farm based on Yaquina Bay. The business cooperated with the precautionary closure and praised the careful monitoring of the bay.

Further shellfish openings of other areas in Lincoln County will occur as clean up and assessments are completed.
