New Carissa, 1999

The ship New Carissa ran aground near Coos Bay Oregon Feb. 4, 1999. It was being towed out to sea late Tuesday night (3/2/99) when its towline snapped under gale-force winds and 30 foot seas. The New Carissa then drifted through the storm for 14 hours before running aground again just south of the Alsea Bay entrance near Waldport Oregon at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday (3/3/99) morning.
