Day One

Photos from the first day

The mandala sand painting process begins with an opening ceremony, during which the lamas consecrate the site and call forth the forces of goodness. This is done by means of chanting, music and mantra recitation, and requires approximately half an hour. The event is visually and acoustically striking.

The lamas then begin the exhibit by drawing an outline of the mandala on the wooden platform, which requires the remainder of the day.

Webcam photo at the end of the first day. The white at the top of the photo is a reflection from the glossy black paint on the tabletop. The round white in the center is a piece of paper on which is drawn the most intricate design for the center of the mandala.
