What's New at Habitat for Humanity - 2008

The Siletz Tribe Pitches in on Habitat's Ninth Home !

This year we have been fortunate to have not only one, but TWO enthusiastic, dedicated teams from the Siletz Tribe participate in our build! Kelley Ellis organized the first team to do the interior framing of the house in August, and the second team to install the dry wall. The Siletz Tribe has a long history of supporting Habitat, having awarded us four grants, totaling over $25,000, to fund home construction over that past eight years. THANK YOU, SILETZ TRIBE!

Ground-Breaking Ceremony--House #9

On Sunday, June 8, 2008, Philip and Denise Bowman and their children, Josh and Keyara, celebrated ground-breaking at the site of their future home. Surrounded by family and Habitat well-wishers, they turned over a shovel full of soil at their lot on Spyglass Ridge Drive in Lincoln City. Construction will begin as soon as lot preparation is complete.

We will again be using work teams of volunteers to build this house. Already, ACE Hardware, the Siletz Tribe, Wells Fargo Bank, West Coast Bank, and Western Title have dedicated teams. Churches, civic groups, and businesses are welcome to organize one team of 6-8 people to work at the construction site for one Saturday. Call our office to choose a step in the construction process. You'll have fun and you'll bring one family's dream another step closer to coming true!

Dedication Ceremony--House #8

On August 5, 2007, Chris Kirkpatrick and Kathy Johnson celebrated the completion of their new home. Pictured above, volunteer coordinator Ruth Green presented a Bible to the couple. They completed over 500 hours of sweat equity, working on construction of the house and helping with assembly our newsletters for bulk mailing. Congratulations, Chris and Kathy!

Wells Fargo Bank in Lincoln City and West Coast Bank branches from Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, and Waldport sent teams to apply the primer paint on our 8th house. These generous volunteers donated time on Saturdays to help their neighbors.  Habitat is all about using community volunteers. Would your business like to organize a team to work on our next Habitat house? If so, call our office at 574-4437. We would love to have you join us!

Habitat for Humanity Cars for Homes Program

Did you know that you can donate your car, truck, RV, or boat to help eliminate the shortage of decent, affordable housing right here in Lincoln County?  For more information, check www.carsforhomes.org or call 887-277-4344. Donated vehicles brought in over $1,700 for our building fund in the first four months of 2007 alone!

Grant Awarded !

We are excited to announce that we have received a generous grant of $5,000 from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund. This fund was founded by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde in order to give back to the community.  As a tribe that was terminated in the 1950's and then restored, the Grande Ronde Tribe is ever grateful for their neighbors and friends who supported their restoration efforts. The Spirit Mountain Community Fund is a way to carry on the Native American tradition of Potlatch, a ceremony at which good fortune is distributed. We are very grateful for these funds, which will be used to frame our ninth house.

Ground-Breaking!

On Sunday, September 10, 2006, a ground-breaking ceremony was held at 1132 SE Galley Court in Lincoln City, where we will soon start construction on the home of our eighth Partner Family, Chris Kirkpatrick and Kathy Johnson. Friends, family, and Habitat Board members joined Chris and Kathy in the celebration.

More Grants Awarded!

Habitat of Lincoln County is proud to announce that we have been selected to receive a grant of $10,583 from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund. The funds will be used for the foundation, plumbing, and electrical work on the home of our eighth Partner Family. We appreciate the truly wonderful support!

We have also been chosen as one of five recipients of an Oregon Association of Realtors Home Foundation Grant of $3,500. This will also be used for construction. Thanks, Oregon Realtors!

 Seventh Home Dedicated

On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Kim Nicklas cut the ribbon at the dedication of her new home. Kim, boyfriend Greg, and her three children put in over 700 hours of sweat equity working on their house, far exceeding the required 500 hours! New Property in Toledo

We have purchased some land in Toledo and will plan to build here once we have completed our fourth house in Lincoln City (we will soon start construction on the third of four).

Get Involved!

We at Habitat of Lincoln County would like to expand our Board of Directors! We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working people who have approximately two hours a week to devote to Habitat and who are able to attend most of our  monthly Board meetings (first Tuesday of the month). Ours is a "working Board": we do not have a paid Executive Director, nor do we have a paid office person. Each Board member also works on one of our committees. If you are someone who would like to offer your time and skills to help Lincoln County families in need of simple, decent, affordable housing, call us at (541)574-4437!
